Description

I dedicate this painting to Leonard Cohen with appreciation and profound respect. Painted while listening to “You Want It Darker,” the build up of the men’s choir so inspired me. Its melancholic nature illustrates my shared experience that felt like perhaps Cohen’s last song. There is no beginning place, just a long stream of touches from the past that moves the hand and places the paint. Working with the rhythm as it flows, I can mark the impression of someone else’s soul touching mine. With brush in hand and music playing, I love standing in front of a canvas, being open to what happens on the canvas. Here, I used a loose interpretation of the Wilhelm de Kooning technique. Mediums get mixed with the oil paint to create runny mixtures of color that slide over each other. The finished product has great textures and a unique transparency.
