Description
According to ancient cosmology, the firmament is a solid dome that separates Earth from Heaven. Embedded in this sphere were the sun, moon, planets, and stars. Since the heavens must be perfect, Aristotle argued that spheres are the most perfect geometrical shape. Today, thanks to the courageous astronomers of the Renaissance, we accept the infinite nature of the universe. This painting captures the sense of infinity and timelessness that we feel when we gaze skyward.
